The Arranger's Dreambook

About Us
Joe Principato's involvement with big band jazz spans more than 50 years, starting with his realization in 6th grade that he would rather play the trumpet than do anything else. Joe was an accomplished musician by the age of 17, playing first in high school bands and then local professional groups around his hometown of Monterey California.

Hollywood beckoned the aspiring young musician, where Joe studied with Lyle "Spud" Murphy, learning his Equal Interval System. After completing his studies, Joe was drafted and went to Germany where he was Staff Arranger for the 83rd Army Band.

After the service he returned to Monterey California, his home town and directed the band opening The Monterey Jazz Festival which brought Joe into contact with visiting greats such as Gil Evans, Quincy Jones, and Benny Carter. He often worked behind the scenes as a copyist in the wee hours before performances at the world famous festival.

Joe remembered the mystery and confusion when he first started arranging so he created the Arranger's Dream Books, volume I II III which answers many of the questions of "how do I get this sound?" "What voicing do I use?"

In 1998 he created volume IV which includes many voicing styles of todays top arrangers.

Joe resides in Oregon where he continues his writing and publishing.
